History of our Maungatapu Retreat
The land on which D’vine Retreat was built has a long history of successful wine production. Twelve acres of vines were planted on the land surrounding the house in the late 1930s, with the house being built at a similar time. In 1939 the first crop was harvested, producing 90 litres of wine. Over the next 15 years, around 9000 litres was produced on average per year. However, rising costs in rates, due to the new nearby highway meant the resident family were forced to rip out all of the vines and subdivide the land. It is this history that has influenced the retreat’s name and architecture.
Information sourced from a news article written by Andrew Duncan in the mid 1990s, when the property was due to be auctioned. |
